Silver Sapphire
Pure aluminum oxide in crystalline, mineral form is called corundum which, if found in its natural form as red-colored crystals, are called rubies. All other colors, ranging from blue to yellow, pink and opaque black (as well as others) are called sapphires. Trace elements of other elements such as iron, chromium and titanium create the sapphire's range of colors.
Blue sapphire is the result of titanium and iron in the stone's crystal lattice. Sometimes, the trace elements do not fully saturate the stone, which is why it comes out with grey-toned colors. For this reason, it is a common practice to heat natural sapphire in order to 'cook out' the errant colors and bring the sapphire back to its original blue color.
Trace elements of vanadium are the reason for purple sapphires, while chromium brings out a pinkish tinge to the stone. Iron, on the other hand, is the trace element behind yellow and green sapphires.
A special and rare form of sapphire is the star sapphire, which shows a six-rayed star-like 'pattern' on the face of the stone, caused by overlapping needle-like lines of a mineral called rutile, which can only be seen with a single source of light held overhead. There are also twelve-rayed star sapphires, but these are very rare.
Sapphires in History
Sapphires are tough gemstones, with a hardness second only to that of diamonds. Tradition holds that the Ten Commandments were written on slabs of sapphire (hence the origin of the word from the Hebrew 'sapir') which were so strong that using a hammer on them would only destroy the hammer.
The early Persians supposed that the world rested on a massive sapphire, and it is the reflection of this sapphire that makes the sky blue - which leads to the claim that the word sapphire comes from the Persian word safir, or 'beloved of Saturn.'
Over the years, sapphires have become associated with wisdom, virtue, holiness and good fortune, as well as sincerity and faithfulness. The latter two virtues associated with sapphires have made them an excellent stone for engagement rings - in fact, both Princess Diana and Princess Anne of the British Royal Family were given sapphire engagement rings by their respective spouses.
Sapphires are also a major part of the British Crown Jewels, as a symbol of pure and wise rulers.
